What to say at the counter

In person

“Thanks so much for coming in! If you enjoyed it, a Google review really helps our shop — you can just scan this QR code.”

Keep it within the rules

  • • Ask every customer, not just the happy ones — filtering who gets asked (“review gating”) breaks Google's rules.
  • • Never offer discounts, gifts or entries for a review.
  • • Only text people who gave you their number and agreed to hear from you, and stop if they ask.
  • • Bulk emails need your business address and an unsubscribe link (US CAN-SPAM law).

How to ask for Google reviews (without being awkward)

  1. Ask at the right moment — right after a good visit, when the customer thanks you, or when a job is finished.
  2. Make it one tap — always include your direct review link, never “find us on Google”.
  3. Make it personal — use their first name and your name. People respond to people, not companies.
  4. Keep it short — two sentences and the link. Texts under 160 characters arrive as one message.
  5. Follow up once — a single friendly reminder a few days later is plenty.

Text, email or in person?

Use all three. A quick mention at the counter plants the seed, a QR sign makes it instant, and a text or email later catches the people who meant to do it but forgot. Service businesses (plumbers, HVAC, cleaners) usually get the best results from a text sent when the job is done.

Then thank them with a reply

When the review comes in, reply with a personal thank-you. It closes the loop and shows future customers you listen. Our free reply generator writes one in seconds.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best way to ask a customer for a Google review?

Ask soon after the visit or job, keep it short, make it personal, and include a direct review link so it takes one tap. A text message right after the visit works well for most local businesses.

When should I send a review request?

The same day — ideally within a few hours, while the experience is fresh. One polite reminder a few days later is fine; more than that starts to feel pushy.

Can I offer a discount for a review?

No. Google doesn't allow incentives for reviews, and the FTC treats paid or rewarded reviews as deceptive. Ask nicely and make it easy instead.

Is it OK to text customers asking for reviews?

Only if they gave you their number and agreed to receive texts from you. Keep it to one message, identify your business, and stop if they ask you to.

Should I only ask happy customers?

No. Filtering who gets asked — called review gating — is against Google's rules. Ask everyone the same way, and reply kindly to any criticism you get.
